Alert! Responding to a Flash Flood Warning | SERVPRO of Wayne

3/15/2024 (Permalink)

Hurricane Waters Flooding the Land Flash floods can cause major damage to your home or business. Call SERVPRO of Wayne to help restore your space to preloss condition!

When it rains, it can really pour around the Wayne area! We are grateful to experience all four seasons and all the weather that comes with them, but sometimes certain weather situations can be overwhelming or even scary to witness.

Flooding is a common concern in the summer when strong storms come through the area, as well as in the late summer if there are any hurricanes or tropical storms tracking the coast. Use the tips below to help you prepare the next time a flood warning is issued for our community.

Staying Safe

The first thing to remember is that flood warnings can be issued even if it is not actively raining. You still need to start preparing even before the rain starts to fall!

Get to work by tidying up your yard and removing any possessions that could be carried away by rushing water. Take the time to tie down anything that is too heavy to move inside but that could still be swept away, like grills or trampolines.

You should also check on your downspouts to make sure they are on and pointed away from your house. Once your exterior is ready, it’s time to prepare inside!

If your basement is prone to flooding, remove any important possessions from the basement level and consider turning off electricity to that area for the time being. Shut your storm shutters and get ready to hunker down for the duration of the weather event.

What to Do When Water Rushes In

If water does start to infiltrate your home, try not to panic! There isn’t much you can do while the rush of water is happening, so stay out of the area and wait for the water to stop flowing. Floodwater can carry all kinds of hazardous materials and toxic substances, so do your best to avoid walking through it or coming into contact with it.

Only get up and move around your house after the water has stopped flowing in and the flood warning has expired. Take photos from a high vantage point and then get us on the phone. Those images will give us a good starting point in creating our restoration plan, and they will also be helpful for your insurance company to have.

Restoring Property

We fully understand that water damage and flood situations are time-sensitive and that acting quickly can prevent further damage, which is why we are available 24/7 to respond to your call for help! The longer the water sits on your floors, the higher the risk you run of suffering serious structural damage and even mold infestations. We work quickly to remove the excess water and hidden moisture in your home and then we will confidently tackle any repairs that are needed.

Floodwater is notorious for causing warped floors, soggy drywall and soaked carpet, so we will address each area of your home thoroughly to make sure your property is returned to its pre-flood state.
