One of the more interesting places to visit in Wayne is the William Paterson University of New Jersey. The Paterson City Normal School, founded in 1855, it is the second-oldest of New Jersey’s nine state colleges and one of the most respected public universities for educating teachers.

A Century of Training Teachers and Growth

Established in Paterson to meet the growing need for educators, one of its original structures was the home of John McCullough, a Scottish immigrant who made a fortune in the wool industry. Today, it is known as Hobart Manor and was designated a state and national landmark in 1976.

The School quickly grew in size and reputation. When it moved to its current campus in Wayne in 1951, it renamed itself the Paterson State Teachers College. The school grounds were purchased by the State of New Jersey in 1948 and were originally owned by the family of Garret Hobart, our nation’s twenty-fourth vice president.

Expanding to Meet the Needs of our State and the Nation

In 1966, the College expanded its curriculum to include degrees in careers other than teaching. The now five academic colleges are organized in these areas:

  • The College of the Arts and Communication grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts,Bachelor of Music, and Master of Music degrees.
  • The Cotsakos College of Business is named for alumni Dr. Christos Cotsakos (’73). A former chairman of the board and CEO for E*TRADE. The College grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Business Administration degrees.
  • The College of Education grants Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, and Master of Education degrees. Students may also pursue teaching certificates.
  • The College of Humanities and Social Sciences grants Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Psychology degrees.
  • The College of Science and Health grants Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees,Master of Science in Nursing. It also offers several pre-professional programs.

In 1971, the college was renamed William Paterson College of New Jersey to honor Justice William Paterson, who was our state's first senator, its second governor, and nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by President George Washington, In June 1997, University status was awarded to William Patterson by the Commission on Higher Education.

Hurricane Forces Need an Equal Response

When a severe storm strikes the area, SERVPRO technicians move in quickly to determine what needs to be done immediately. In most cases this involves:

  • Securing the structure
  • Removing floodwater and debris
  • Demolishing property not restorable
  • Cleaning and repairing restorable property

Technicians cover roof and wall damage with tarps or plywood to reduce the risk of further damage from weather and animal intrusions. As they do this, other team members bring in pumps and other extractors to remove standing water and moisture trapped under floors and behind walls.

If flooring or wall panels are too water-damaged, team members remove them for disposal. Once completed, they clean surfaces with an antibacterial agent and repair where possible.
